This can be seen as a bug in the wrapper. A better version shold be discussed with the Debian Java team. I've had success running josm with jamvm and gij, but see there are visual glitches when using Classpath. These are bugs in Classpath, as far as I know.
It currently work best with SUN Java, no doubt about that. Can you provide the setting for the java alternative when experiencing this problem (as in ls -l /etc/alternatives/java)?
