(setq planner-show-only-existing nil)

It seems that this forces planner to actually create the physical files
when moving around the calendar.

It is necessary, from what I gather, to set this so that when moving in
calendar you can see a plan page including diary entries for days where
there are no current plan pages. Otherwise you dont see diary entries for
days with no existing plan page for certain dates.

I dont think it is necessary for planner to create the actual file in
ones Plans directory though unless the file is physically modified with
a task or note added to it. Diary is only a "view" onto the diary file
and so it nor really responsible for enforcing a plan page create and
write.
