Dear Nate:
  I am also still getting just a black screen (I tried both the new tarball and 
svn version 165).  When I click on the window, gazebo sometimes prints out a 
line that  says "Name[something:somenumber]" so I am assuming that it is doing 
something.  Also, I can close the program by pressing tab but while gazebo is 
running, I can not type into another terminal.  I have attached my logs.
