Hi,
I am experiencing the same problem on an Ubuntu 64 system, glxgears
works, as do the majority of the Ogre demos. Graphics card is Nvidia
8800 Ultra, CPU an AMD 64 X2 4200.
I had no trouble whatsoever on another machine with an Intel P4 and a
Nvidia Geforce 7 running 32bit Ubuntu.
The only major difference between the systems is that the new one runs a
64 Ubuntu.

hendrik.
