It'll be a while before it's useable. Right now, it runs damm slow. I've
no doubt that we'll see amazing speed improvements in the next few weeks,

Yeah, it will with a BS like that -- you just told it to read 483M of zeros,
and then write it out to windisk483. You might want to try "dd if=/dev/zero
of=windisk483 bs=1M count=483", which will go in blocks of 1M, which can
probably fit more comfortably in RAM.
Or your could use misc/createdisk.sh; read misc/createdisk.README.
