While I am not the person you were addressing this to, I would certainly
be interested in "listening to this" (on or off the list), I have been
using VMWare since the beta release of version 1.0 and have recently
upgraded to version 3.0. I have no affiliation of any sort with VMWare,
and my experience has been comparable to that expressed by Yasha Karant,
despite the fact that I probably give it a far more extensive workout,
running a mix of "MS garbage" and Linux virtual machines. I have been
modeling firewall/DMZ networks and distributed computing networks running
half a dozen or more virtual machines at a time. VMWare is not perfect, I
have filed a few bug reports against it, but I have found them to be
reasonably responsive, and none of the bugs prevented me from using it for
what I needed to get done. This is one of the few software products
that I actually recommend to people, so if others are having serious
problems I want to know, since recommending a product with problems to my
customers will not help my reputation.
After all the above, everyone may wonder why I bother with the Plex86
list, there are several reasons:
1 - As Yasha indicated, the licensing fees for VMWare are rather high,
so I have chosen limit it's use to one computer in my office rather
than pay for additional licenses.
2 - I would like some of the features of their higher end products,
but the licensing fees for these are in my opinion completely
absurd.
3 - There are features which are not available in VMWare that I would
like to see added, but have to wait for them to decide they are
worth the time and money.
4 - I have extensive experience in low level software development,
including design and development work on computer and microprocessor
simulation and emulation systems, so I figured I might be able to
contribute something when I have spare time.
FWIW.
