And when is ati-xorg-devel needed? I guess you should not own the
%{_includedir}/GL directory:

installing ati-xorg-devel-8.20.8-2plf.x86_64.rpm from /var/cache/urpmi/rpms
Preparing...
#############################################
Installation failed:
file /usr/include/GL from install of ati-xorg-devel-8.20.8-2plf
conflicts with file from package lib64xorg-x11-devel-6.9.0-1mdk

Also, for ati-xorg, perhaps you want the `ls' to fail silently here:

Preparing...
#############################################
ls: /usr/share/fglrx/./preun_*.sh: No such file or directory
ls: /usr/share/fglrx/./postun_*.sh: No such file or directory
ls: /usr/share/fglrx/./*.list: No such file or directory

It seemed to be a problem with urpmi. I re-added the source and it works
now.

I would prefer using smart, but it doesn't seem to handle release tags
right.

Thanks for your help.

I haven't had any success with the ATI free drivers. Also, neither (free
or proprietary) recognize the Radeon X550 that I have, but I can force
it to another chip in my xorg.conf.

If XFdrake were smart, it would force the chip. But I have not had
success with XFdrake either in getting a proper config for the
proprietary driver.
