Stephan already replied, and yes your statement is false. The official 
difference is that main packages are officially supported. By supported 
understand:

- QA team will reply if you have problem with it,
- Mandriva will officially provide security updates during X month after the 
release.

Having said that, I am not sure QA team is able to answer to everything 
related to main media, the location of a package is often an arbitrary 
choice.
If a package is usefull, it is moved into main. The usefullness of a package 
is hard to define, if it was me openlad would go into contrib, svn and darcs 
into main. Fortunaly, I don't have to decide :)
