I have thought about this a lot (and ways to generate random passwords for database users), since I have my own software which needs to make use of a database, and I would like to automate the process.
I'm all for creating random passwords, in most situations. In case of mythtv, these passwords also need to be used by each frontend connecting to the backend, even on the local system. Which is in most cases a random user (not pre-defined). In that case the password would need to be easily found by the user using the frontend.
