Hello people,

Getting fed up with how slow Xvid encoding was on my Mandriva 2008.1
64-bit, I started tinkering with packages: first latest CVS extract,
then with the latest "stable" package - which is also the source for
PLF's Xvid package.

I discovered one snag: it seems the PLF package was compiled without
assembly support (meaning yasm wasn't installed on the packager's
machine). Doing so, then merely replacing /usr/lib64/libxvidcore.so.4.1
with my brand new one yielded immediate results: the very same video
stream encoded almost 3 times faster! From almost 3 minutes for a
thousand (moving) images, to slightly more than one minute on the next
try! The build based on the latest tarball was slower than the one based
on official 1.1.3, but still much faster (at least 2x) than PLF's.

I should mention too that the resulting file was slightly smaller, too.

I don't know how to make a package, however if anybody is kind enough to
explain it to me, get ready for an encoding boost...

Mitch
