As far as I can tell, all problems have now been solved with the C and
C++ versions of x08c as of commit d400825.  I really like the
resulting new look for this example, and I think you will also.

I classify this example as finalized now, and please use it as a
template to propagate to other languages (as I am about to do for Lua,
Python, Octave, and Java).
