Yes, in the absence of any free "native" Win32 apps, that's probably the 
best option.
I already have Cygwin, so it's just a matter of getting xfig installed 
(which, for various reasons of dubious validity, is not quite as simple as 
it ought to be :-)
I'm sure it can be done.

I was just looking at the gd driver (as I already have a static libgd, too) 
and wondering how I might get it to build ... but if that driver is not up 
to the standard of pngcairo, then I'll forget about that and go with 
pngcairo instead.

I was hoping to be able to include the png capability using static libs 
only, but that's starting to look a bit unrealistic. Ultimately, I would 
like to be able to provide a Perl/PDL binary that provides good plplot 
support - and the production of such a binary is simplified if dynamic libs 
are not involved. It's looking to me, however, that it will require far too 
much work to achieve the desired plplot functionality using static libs - 
and that I should just go with the dll's.
