@Arjen:

In my experience running pkg-config twice like that with the separate
options should give exactly the same result as running it once with
the two options.

@Hiro:

We are desperate here to find a solution to this extremely puzzling
issue so by all means try any experiment you can think of including
this one suggested by Arjen or the one I suggested previously to cut
and paste pkg-config results so that your hand-crafted build command
doesn't use pkg-config directly.
