Any device running PalmOS 3.5 or later will be able to display images
of a different bit depth, i.e. if the included image is a 8bpp color
image and the screen is set to 1bpp it will display a 1bpp version of
the image. Devices running an older version of PalmOS can't display
image of a different bit depth, though. Another problem is the
"internal" image compression; some PalmOS versions will crash if you
try to scroll a page that has such images. No one said it would be 
"easy" to develop for all the different PalmOS versions ;-)
