My example was not 100% correct (it would be true for a color device, but not for other devices). It seems that the device must be able to support the bit depth, but it can still display an image when you set the screen to a lower bit depth, e.g. if I have a 4bpp image on my TRGpro and the screen depth is set to 1bpp it will still display the image (in b/w).
