Currently, annotations can be attached to any word. Use the lookup pane of the prefs to configure the viewer to let you enter an annotation by tapping on a word. Or assign the "Annotate" action to something. This lets you then tap on a word, and annotate it. Once annotated, the word is shown highlighted, and acts as a hyperlink to the annotation. The annotations are kept in the metadata. They will eventually be moved out of there into a separate database, I expect, so future versions will not be able to read any annotations you create now.
