The Guardian's free sites are pretty good I find - although it is of
course a matter of preference. They have a few different ones available
(if you don't have these yet Mr Desrosiers!):

http://www.guardian.co.uk/avantgo/
http://football.guardian.co.uk/avantgo/
http://media.guardian.co.uk/avantgo/
http://film.guardian.co.uk/avantgo/
http://politics.guardian.co.uk/avantgo/
http://football.guardian.co.uk/avantgo/
http://sport.guardian.co.uk/avantgo/

The Independent are trying to flog their palm edition for 6.50 a month!
I can buy the discounted paper edition from my student union shop for
less than that.

Ananova was good up until a few days ago when its Avantgo-style content
was replaced by pda.ananova.com which seems more suited for live access
(i.e. it links to all TV regions rather than the one you choose etc.).

BBC news is really good, and I don't personally consider providing an
excellent web-based news service an abuse of the license fee :-)
