/me agrees too. it's much easier to filter on subject than from/to address.

As the issue is insoluble - there are arguments both ways - this discussion could go on for ever so, as a mailing list owner, I make a sole response.
In my experience:
i. My lists always have [listname] in the Subject: because the subscribers are not technically knowledgeable and it's easiest (as they can see what to filter on right in front of their noses umpteen times). This can be taken too far; one list I am a member of - but not an owner of, alas - has every single post preceded with "-- The Art of Playing the Piano --", would you believe!
ii. I suspect most subscribers to this list _are_ technically knowledgeable (I note many Linux users) so the argument in i. doesn't apply.
iii. At least the other Great Battle about mailing lists (should replies go, by default, to the list or to the original poster) has been avoided so far; again, because of the risk (and actualit, as it turned out) of disaster I eventually settled on 'to the original poster' for safety.
iv. As someone without a principled bone in his body I am not bothered what is adopted here ;)
Now, can a new beta of Plucker 1.6 be released to soak up attention? :)
