It could be that something is wrong with the Ubuntu Desktop Environment
(GDM) but the underlying OS (CLI console) may still be
accessible. Ctrl+Alt+F2 (or F3,F4,F5,F6) to switch to TTY command console.

If the above tutorial does *not* resolve the login issue, then a fresh
install may be more expeditious to write a small script to install all your
extra apps (packages).  BTW, I
It's good that you have your "HOME" on a different disk partition; you can
tell the installer to mount "HOME" disk partition on /home (there's no
extra work involved).
