I have 57 youtube videos that were supposed to be part of a PHP Learning
channel. I received a very low response. Seems those who what to learn
PHP are adverse to leaning how to setup VirtuualBox to create a LAMP
testing environment. So I have changed course.
My setup consists of Win10 (I know it is expired) VirtualBox, PuTTY,
VSCode, Camtasia, and Canva. My desktop is Kubuntu to I can shell into
the virtual hosts on VirtualBox. I use the win and Linux host files to
configure the virtual hosts with a private domain ie *.local
Eventually I would like to dump Win10. I've done some research on
replacing Camtasia with something Linux. Kdenlive is highly rated
however it does not do screen capture.
What did I pivot to? Seems there is an affordability crisis. I can
attest it is true in my household. We had extra 4 years ago. Now we
are barely making it. I have decides to revive my PHP freelance
business.
I do not know much about your pursuits, Steve, however you will probably
see a boost in traffic and conversions if you start using YouTube.
YouTube is the 2nd largest search engine, behind Google. And did I
mention Google likes websites that have embedded YouTube videos.
Some are reporting that there is a movement away from polished videos to
ones that may not be as polished and are made for real people by real
people.

Hi all,
I'm considering making an instructional Youtube video about learning
the minimal knowledge of Rust. It will be very much like my supposedly
25 minute XML HTML presentation Wednesday night. You know, the one that
stretched to 40 minutes :-).
I'll be tailoring the presentation according to the modern human traits
Sy pointed out at the meeting:
1. I need to immediately show them the benefit.
2. I have to make them curious very quickly.
3. Every few seconds I have to hit them with something new and shiny.
4. I can't overly depend on AI, LLMs, Vibe coding, whatever it's
called.
But make no mistake, the purpose is that viewers walk away with a basic
understanding of the most basic underpinnings of Rust. They have to
know it in their muscle memory.
About 50% of the video will be switching between a full screen editor
(most likely GVim but maybe Bluefish), and a full screen terminal
emulator. Both will be big font black print on white background: I'm
not one of those estupidos who presents using the default VSCode color
scheme next to their face, so that the code is barely discernable.
Absolutely no long blocks of text, and no code that doesn't contribute
to the point being made.
The other 50% will be divided between my face talking and things that
look like sparse but bold Powerpoint slides to jar the audience members
out of their complacency. I'll also occasionally have a big sound
effect for the same purpose, but I will *not* have music to compete
with the information being conveyed. Right Sy?
I have a pretty decent Talent microphone, and nobody seems to have
trouble understanding me in Jitsi meetings. I think the same can be
said about my now ancient Logitech webcam. I'll comb my hair. I'll get
some headphones so feedback isn't a problem.
I have no idea what tools I'll need. I do know that I make a lot of
mistakes, so I'll need some sort of video editor to cut out mistakes
and splice other stuff together, as well as a way to write text on top
of already recorded stuff. I'm not going to spend a lot of money on
equipment or fixing up my environment. Maybe I'll buy some cheap fabric
and hang it from a taut rope so the mess isn't visible. Could you
please
give me any recommendations on Free Software tools I should use to
create this on Linux?
I'm copying the Phoenix LUG because they have some video gurus
there.
Thanks,
SteveT
