Yes, 'bits' is lowercase 'b' and 'bytes' is uppercase 'B' (usually).

Also IIRC theres something like 1 'stop bit' and 1 'parity bit' for
every 8 bits so 56 kbps is not really 7 kBps rather 5.6 kBps and that
displayed value too is driver dependant I guess.

Also don't forget the compression (as mentioned before) that happens
when 'compressable' data is being transferred (text, html etc). (I
forgot that part so the claim of getting 7-10 kBps or more could be
possible)

Then again, theres things like TCP and IP packet headers which take up
some space in addition to the actual (usable) data and the modem driver
might report overall (with headers) data transferred or just the actual
(user) data...
