SuSE might be detecting the modems alright, but maybe it's guessing it's
drivers wrong/ or maybe it doesn't have drivers at all for that modem. I for
one use conexant internal modem (D-Link). SuSE didn't detect my modem on it's
own. I had to install drivers for it. Try linuxant.org or linmodems.org
Why should it be a kernel problem? It's simply a peripheral not getting
configured properly, so you need the correct drivers.

You said "shows it configured as modem0 in Yast but still does not work
in kppp". What is the exact behavior of kppp? Any error messages?
Post it here.

Kapil
