I have the Home 1800 plan in Bangalore since end-Feb and Home 500 in
Pune, since mid-March, been good so far... My Home 1800 plan with
modem rental comes to about Rs 2200/- or so I think (I'm just removing
my phone call charges approximately here).

I got the Huawei MT 800 Smart-AX DSL modem which also has PPPoE
dialler, firewall,NAT,router,DHCP functionality so I've set it up so
that the modem dials into BSNL when I switch it on... and my PC is set
to get IP automatically (DHCP) so Linux works great

Hopefully these days for new signups they still give some decent modem
like the mt800...

See http://appaji.net/stuff/dataone/bdah.html for a HOWTO and also
check out http://broadbandforum.in/ for lots of chit-chat about
Broadband in India.

There's also the http://broadbandblog.in/ site for occasional stuff
coming there...

It's good that they're dropping prices but it's too slow and we need
to really have more generous download quotas, I finished 3.5 GB out of
my 5GB monthly quota in the first week then I have to restrain myself
from downloading more (just weekend stuff). They should triple the
download quotas on all plans then life will be good 8-) and even after
tripling (say 15GB for the Home 1800 512kbps plan) it will still
remain at about 10% of the possible maximum a leecher/abuser can do
with full-time 24x7 downloading...
