This is always going to happen. Everyone wants a slightly different
mix of packages. satisfying all is not really viable. Although I would
say that lex and yacc should be installed on any distribution, I'm
again speaking with my own biased point of view.

First up, and a little OT, please use punctuation. Much easier to read
emails with good punctuation. Next, a lot of distros dont have native
mp3 support (some licensing issues about which I dont know a lot). But
its really not a big deal to install the mp3 support.

This is a very subjective topic. Whats good for you is not good for
me. Thats why you have so many options open. Pick and choose the
packages you want and install them.

See 1.

for both, see 1.

This is a slightly gray area... nvidia and ati cards do seem to have
decent binary drivers available. I'll admit that its still a little
hard to get multiplexed alsa sound working (I dont think I have it
working, but then, I did not really care to get it to work).

Any operating system requires "post installation work". (Unless you
are installing a debian/gentoo like OS which allows you to tweak and
customize your installation to the extreme, and then you dont have to
do anything after install).

Thats the best way to find out.
