i'm assuming your script works when invoked manually and chkconfig creates
the correct links. i experienced the same squid startup problems when run
from the /etc/rc.d/init.d script. what i did was to run squid from inittab
*once* and let the init.d script handle running or stopping squid when
runlevels change.

i still haven't found out why it won't start from init.d. i'm using
2.2.STABLE5.
