Yes S3 cards WORK in general. Only the el-cheapo, bottom-of-the-barrel
Trio3D 2X does not work. But the Savage4 and Savage2000 (as implemented in
the Diamond Viper II Z200) are supported at least in 2D.

Consider: the Trio3D 2X has the 2D engine of the Savage3/4 and the 3D
engine of the ViRGE (in other words, it does not have a 3D engine worth
mentioning).

Also, no one seems to mention ATI and Matrox cards. These have
traditionally been well-supported by XFree, and ATI is now publishing an
API to use the hardware-accelerated DVD on the ATI Rage 128 chip.
