No. You can do it in such a way that mgetty will handle the answering of
incoming calls.
I just don't know the configuration if you are going to use portslave.

Anyways, for the four years i have been configuring my linux as a ppp
server, do this.
make sure that mgetty is installed.

1. You will have to edit /etc/inittab. add this line
s0:23:respawn:/sbin/mgetty -D ttyS0 -s 115200 -n 1
s1:23:respawn:/sbin/mgetty -D ttyS1 -s 115200 -n 1

2. save inittab and make sure that the modem is on.
run "init q" on the prompt.

What does the above line says.
Listen for DATA on com1 with the speed of 115200 and answer after 1 ring.

3. Add /etc/ppp/options.ttys0 & /etc/ppp/options.ttyS1. if you're lan is at
192.168.10.0 network

/etc/ppp/options.ttyS0
192.168.10.250:192.168.10.251

/etc/ppp/options.ttyS1
192.168.10.252:192.168.10.253

What does this do? It assigns 192.168.10.251 and .253 for remote users.

4. chmod u+s /usr/sbin/pppd

This allows simple user to execute pppd.

5. edit $HOME/username/.bashrc
add the ff:
alias ppp="exec /usr/sbin/pppd -detach"

6. edit /etc/ppp/options
add noauth

7. Btw, please bring up terminal after dialing if dialing from a
Win95/98/2000 box.
once you're logged in, type ppp and you'll see garbage of characters. Then
click continue. and you're done.

I just hope na i didn't miss anything. :-)

hope this helps...
