One of my friends got a 10GB Seagate U8 drive (those crappy Medalists..
hate 'em.. but they're cheap). Died the next day. One of my other friends
got a 10GB Maxtor DiamondMax Nova 7200rpm drive (supposedly higher-end, it
was 7200rpm). Died after two days. These two events both happened in the
last two months.

I've had two Quantum Bigfoot drives. Had a good experience with them. But
some of the people on this list absolutely hate Quantum. I now have a 28GB
Seagate Barracuda ATA. Looks pretty sturdy (compared to the U8 drives..)
and my experience with SCSI Barracudas is pretty good. NB the Barracuda
ATA was formerly known as the Medalist Pro.. came in both SCSI (Hawk) and
IDE versions.

What I suggest is you get a Linux installation (such as Redhat 6.2) which
can run off an image file in a DOS partition. You can't do Perl on
floppies. Sure tomsbrt and similar floppy-only distros are amazing.. but
Perl is huge. Perl alone would take up an entire floppy.

Or you can get ActiveState Perl for Windoze. It's only about 10MB
download.

Any sufficiently perverted technology is indistinguishable from Perl.
