Here's an expensive (in terms of memory) solution:
run two X servers, one on /dev/tty3 (or whatever is your usual) with the
usual colour depth, and one on /dev/tty4 with 640x480 8bit. You can switch
between the two with Ctrl-Alt-Fx (x = number of your tty).
I'd try this but I've seen my X server eating 78MB of RAM (sad but true).
Even after subtracting 16MB for the framebuffer, that's still 62MB!!! and
I thought putting 256MB in my desktop would eliminate all my memory
problems.. :(
