Simple....

A network card has pins 1 and 2 for transmitting and pins 3 and 6 for 
receiving, while a hub has pins 1 and 2 for receiving and pins 3 and 6 for 
transmission.  When we connect a network card to a hub, a straight through 
cable is ok.  When you connect two network cards together (w/o a hub) you need 
a cross connect.  The same is through for hub to hub connection.
Except that some hubs have the MDI/MDI-X switch, in which case, you don't need 
a cross connect cable if you toggle this switch (on one of the hubs).
