imagine on a hub:

mouth - connects to line pair 1 (transmit pair)
ear - connects to line pair 2 (receive pair)

if you connect hub 1 to hub 2 using a straight cable, you'd end up
connecting hub 1's mouth to hub 2's mouth and hub 1's ear to hub 2's ear.
no conversation takes place - won't work.  so you need to use a crossed
pair such that hub 1's mouth connects to hub 2's ear and vice versa.
