This is cool and trivial too!
First when we talk about hubs.. technically there are two ways to
interconnect them..
One is Cascading. Actually what you are asking is how to cascade a hub.
Interconnecting them via cross cables. You see in an Ethernet (10BaseT)
Hub.. you use four wires and four pins of the connector. They are called MDI
(media dependent interface)
To effect communications, the transmit pair should be connected to the
receive pair and vice versa. The Hub actually expects this (as it expects
that we are going to use straight patch cables..) so they already crossed
the ports! So a Hub port in its normal state is actually not an MDI but an
MDI-X ! (Crossed MDI)
So when we need to connect a Hub to another Hub we need to cross the cable
to get a straight connection! (Crossing an already crossed connected port
results in a straight connection)
MOst hub nowadays.. have a button for a particular port which switches the
pins to MDI.. for hub-to-hub connections para we can use a straight cable
and not have to make a crosses one.
Wow! thats very criss-crossing.. i hope i didnt get you more confused. I
wanted to draw a diagram kaya lang matagal eh.. hehehe..
Peace!
