i was going to suggest vector linux but this is what distrowatch has
to offer (but im not sure on the i386 part)..

light distro + light wm (icewm| *box | xfce) + light apps. i dont
think that baby can even handle OOo apps. and upgrading that RAM is
one of the biggest boosts that the computer can get. try tipidpc.com
for some second hand RAM if your friends are willing to risk it. :)
