Personally, I like some of them a lot: GNOME, Fluxbox and Ratpoison.
Although the last one is something I don't usually show to people who
are totally new to FOSS because they really think it's too geeky...
But I agree with you that the various DEs, WMs available really rock!

You could actually use EMMS on Emacs to play media files =) I do
that. Well, there's also eshell on Emacs so I can use that too...
