You have to take account of autostarted daemons.

Gentoo 2.6.12 P3 650mhz, 128mb ram, 20g 5400rpm 26sec
Gentoo 2.6.13-r6 Athlon 2000+, 512mb ram, 80g 7200rpm 17sec
eth0, distccd, sshd, thttpd, ratpoison autostarted
