If you'll manage MS Office files, I believe you'll spend time in
Windows, and so PDF distillers like Acrobat can be option.

Actually, no need to buy PDF Distillers. You can download PDFCreator from:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/pdfcreator

and using it like a printer, almost find it a pleasure of converting
any document format to PDF.
