Sir Leo, Hi! Personally, I prefer SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 9 because it has more goodies out-of-the-box. For example, SLES, unlike RHEL, comes with:
* drbd, which you could use for over-the-network replication of storage devices. Think disaster recovery site in a remote location. * both Apache 1.3.x and 2.x - if you're going to run PHP applications, I recommend that you use Apache 1.3. * clamav - antivirus * lustre lite - clustered file system * heartbeat - for high availability setups * Yast2 - a maturing, centralized GUI-interface for the most common administration tasks. Think Windows Control Panel. Also, I find SLES's default configurations more secure than RHEL4's. Plus, I like SLES's capability to setup dependencies among the services. In RHEL, you'll have to clunkily adjust numbers in the chkconfig definitions in the init scripts. NEGATIVE COMMENTS ON SLES * Say goodbye to updates when your support expires. Novell/SUSE doesn't seem to make publicly available their update SRPMS. Red Hat DOES make their update SRPMS publicly available. Please verify with Red Hat or Novell/SUSE if they'd support custom builds of their SRPMS. * SLES for EM64T, AMD64, and Itanium are not certified for use with EMC CLARiiON devices in clustered configurations. Well, this is bad news if, for example, you really want EMC CLARiiON devices for Oracle RAC on 64-bit SLES. * I think there are more Red Hat Certified guys locally than Novell/SUSE Certified ones. * I think that Red Hat is more at the comfort level of decision makers and local Linux enthusiasts. In any event, your organization's comfort level with Red Hat or SUSE, certification with apps and hardware, and quality of local on-site support will ultimately influence your decision.
