Yes, the VMWare Player is free for use. While downloading the VMWare player, why not download an Ubuntu VM as well? If you're still using windows, you can try out Ubuntu without rebooting or loading a Live CD. Just download the image, install the player, and point the virtual machine and you'll have an Ubuntu system running inside your current operating system.
