I used to have a Fujitsu Lifebook, with Mandriva and Fedora and never had any problems :)

Personally I swear by the Thinkpads. Good experience, and cheap, too, if you consider the R50e models (under P40,000). Caveat will be the Winmodems because that they come with. You'll have a heck of a time getting them to work. But this is more the norm rather than the exception for notebook computers.
