This question is really for the PLUG-misc mailing list -- where we can
philosophize and throw around all the rhetoric we could ever want. That
list was made for precisely that reason (and a very famous geekette) so
that the non-technical issues are not tackled on the main plug list.

I do not condone this activity, and would like to request that the
discussion on this "matter" is directed and conducted at the plug-misc
mailing list.

Your curiosity may make way for some for the following:

1) Undue philosophical discourse on the goodness or "badness" of a thing
-- for which goodness or badness is only attributed to by people.
There's no inherent goodness or badness in anything -- what something is
is only what someone defines it. Now if you define Linux as a good and
bad thing, then that's your definition of Linux which may deviate from
the definition of many people here. However, your definition does not
make Linux as it is, and then we come to the conclusion that we're not
playing the same language game.

See what I mean by making way for undue philosophical discourse? ;)

2) Thought inducing and emotion provoking reactions which may or may not
result in a healthy mailing list environment. We can start a flame war
over this, granting that some people will gladly jump on the "I have
something to say too" bandwagon -- which isn't really a technical matter
therefore mis-using the resources provided for by the PLUG.

That's the same reason why we ask that we take our "fights" somewhere
else. ;)

3) Undue waste of personal brain cycles which results in members getting
encouraged to post "whatever" posts on the main plug list. These lists
take resources to maintain, and out of the generosity of a lot of people
this is available to us. Let's at least show some decency and not waste
this resource just for our personal mental masturbation (which I am
currently guilty of, and will get to my point in a while).

To put it in a technical light, see below.

I'm sure your sureness is well misplaced. Linux, is neither good nor bad
-- it's an operating system created from scratch by Linus Torvalds and
developed by many people around the world. For a definition of what
Linux is (as per press release purposes or for the "as a matter of fact"
definition) please read the README file which comes with the Linux
source code.

Goodness or badness of something is not inherent -- it's only something
people attribute.
