Hmmm, was this the same case for more than one Ubuntu CD? (I'm assuming you have more than one pressed CD ;) If its a circa-2000 mobo you shouldn't really have problems with it; it might be the install media itself (which, I believe, may have gotten more than just a bang for a buck.)
