I've done some fairly stupid things in my life, so I don't completely rule this out. Perhaps it is something truly mind-bogglingly basic that eludes me, after all this is supposed to be the distro for grandmothers.
Hmmm, was this the same case for more than one Ubuntu CD? (I'm
assuming you have more than one pressed CD ;) If its a circa-2000
mobo you shouldn't really have problems with it; it might be the
install media itself (which, I believe, may have gotten more than just
a bang for a buck.)
The LiveCD worked just fine. Actually the thing installed, but when it got to the part where it reboots to install more packages (how.. Windows-esque) GRUB failed with an error 18. Turns out "error 18" is " Selected cylinder exceeds maximum supported by BIOS" -- I thought that problem had gone away like a bad dream when LILO got booted out!
