In fact, filesystems supported by the Linux kernel do have mkfs
utilities. mkfs(8) is a 'stub' or 'frontend' that forks off to the
appropriate utility when you specify the filesystem type via the -t
argument (usually mkfs.<fsname>, i.e. mkfs.ext3 to make ext3
filesystems). So, if you already know the filesystem type you want
(and you also want to access the more esoteric options of the
filesystem), you can also call mkfs.<fsname>.
