How are the SLAX users doing? I'm trying it out and so far so good...
except in one case I got a worrisome kernel panic about squashfs (the
fs used to store modules and join multiple filesystems into single
fs's)
I tried it, I liked it. In fact, I liked it so much it's already my favorite LiveCD distro. The compactness is very appealing, and I think makes it more accommodating to disk and system memory.
Specifics I like about it:
1) Customizability. You can easily roll your own CD with the packages you need, so it can be as small as you want it to be or as big as you need it to be.
2) Load to RAM. Means you can take it out of the CD so you can load other stuff later on. Also means less wear and tear on the CD drive.
3) Online configuration repository. Sure, 8MB is kind of small, but it does mean that you can theoretically take Slax with you to your cybercafe or your school lab and still get the same settings.
4) Killbill has just about the slickest and problem-free implementation of Wine I've seen. I've only tried it with a handful of applications, but still...I got Little Fighter 2 to run!
5) Popcorn...very small but still very slick. Now, if I can only find a decent computer that will let me boot from USB flash disk.
Yes, yes, the article is still pending, but it'll get written. And hopefully...published in dead-tree version.
