you may use a USB Memory Stick-based (or CF, etc) linux distro.
prefer for a USB 2.0-complaint device.

pc based routers are not good for frequent on and off since it uses
hard disk and you need to manually shutdown it unlike appliance router
where you just push the off button and its done.
