Why is it this perception of the Linux desktop "catching up" with
Windows is so prevalent? Microsoft and other closed systems like OSX
has established partnerships with hardware manufacturers to make these
improvements possible. GNOME as a whole, does not since we're very
much a volunteer effort. For a global effort, it has made significant
improvements. If the gap is becoming a chasm, then don't let it happen
(make a difference and put yourself to the next level). There has been
heavy discussion within GNOME on reconsidering its target audience
since people generally compare (its the easiest to do for starters) to
the point of complaining and trolling around.

that's true. A lot of stuff from the OpenCD project I am involved with
has such goals.

yes that's silly really. FOSS on closed systems can be used to teach
people on what free software can do for them and its up to them to
decide to take it to the next level.
