If load is your only problem, why are looking for an alternative? Won't it be more cost-effective operationally to just throw hardware at the problem? Get faster servers with larger storage capacities. Improve the network infrastructure. Segregate the users into groups and provide for multiple Samba servers, optionally storing data in a central storage system (GFS on top of iSCSI, for example). If load isn't your only problem, then sharing the functional shortcomings of Samba in the context of your environment will help us help you.
