There was a group of hobbyists in the US who made a very interesting piece of equipment. Very good for you DIY community internet folks, without the headaches and hassles of the NTC.
What you do is, you take a common HDSL-1000 IrDA transceiver, and replace the IR diode with a laser diode. What this does is, you can now do IrDA communications over a vastly increased range (say 500 meters). You do need a lens in front of the diode receiver (old camera lenses work fine..) and, alignment becomes very critical.
But because most PC's already have IR ports (even desktops: they have the IR connector but no IR transceivers) the connection is basically "free." It's a serial port, so you can run pppd or similar on it. Also, laser diodes are cheap ($10 to $20 for "real" ones, but with Chinese laser pointers going for 150 pesos...)
Best of all, no pesky NTC to get on your case.
This is FSO at its cheapest. FSO can get really expensive (e.g. $50,000 for a single link, good for 10-20 km range, at DS3 speed).
