close lid is tricky - what Ubuntu distro are you using? On Ubuntu 6.06 (Dapper) Development verison, g-p-m can be configured to close on lid but my current main laptop (Toshiba Tecra M2) doesn't work (hotkeys work fine though).
Not familiar with the NEO brand, but do they have hotkeys for suspend/hibernate?
