This is harder to do properly than most people realize. Most soundcards' audio inputs tend to suck badly, and introduce noise and other artifacts, and that's also a problem with cables you use to hook up to the tape player. One way to compensate is to incorporate digital filters into your stream to process the audio you've recorded (although you do have to know a bit about these things and there are limits to what is possible). I once used glame [1] to do this kind of thing.
